Roleplaying This Jake Kid
Going over Jake's logs so far, it's easy to see that the way he speaks is one of the most individual of all the characters introduced thus far. I'd put him right up there with Karkat when it comes to originality, though obviously Jake doesn't swear in a way that'd make a sailor blush. I've tried playing him lately, and while getting the basic hang of his typing style is easy enough, his word choice and expressions are a lot more complicated.
Basics: -Jake capitalizes the first word of every sentence, and uses no capitalization afterwards. -He uses commas and periods. -He'll occasionally pop in some roleplay-esque actions *like so* (as opposed to using dashes or something else) -He doesn't put apostrophes in his contractions: were, youre, arent, not we're, you're, aren't The difficult part is representing his character and word use, and this is where I run into problems. A lot of his expressions can be described as old-fashioned, even quaint, but in my opinion, Jake manages to make them inexplicably badass. Anyone else have tips on how to play him? I usually play John, Rose, Tavros, Karkat, Terezi, Vriska, sober/stoned Gamzee, Eridan, The Signless, Redglare, Mindfang, Dualscar, or Jake.
If you feel like roleplaying Terezi < 3< Vriska in any situation or RP style, PM me! |

Rightyo! Looking for help on playing mister english i see.
You see what i do is i typically attempt to sound posh and mad sweet at the same time. As well as i throw in elements of being a dork into the mix when needed. I typically do use british slang, not stereotypical stuff like 'pip pip cheerio' though as thats just too dorky even for him. |

RE: Roleplaying This Jake Kid
I will cross-post this thing I did in an unrelated thread a little while back, because it's more fitting here.
Jake English
Hex Color: #1f9400-------------------------------- RGB Color: (31,148,0) The thing with Jake is that his slang and speech patterns are all over the place. Sometimes he uses archaic british slang, sometimes he sounds vaguely australian, and sometimes american 50's, 60's and other random time periods. He mixes it all together. Quote: We all know he has a habit of british slang, but Malarkey, Rootin-tooin, and Jive all have roots firmly planted in North america. For the text side of his quirk, Jake does not use the apostrophe in his contractions and he doesn't capitalize anything that's not the first letter of a sentence unless it's to place emphasis on the word. He does use punctuation to end his sentences, using multiple marks for emphasis at times. Quote: One aspect about his character, however, that seems overlooked when discussing his quirks: Swearing. He doesn't just "swear like a sailor", though he may use more profanity than one. His swearing usually seems out of place, including modern variations like "friggin". He uses common modern swears, likely picked up from his friends online. In some instances this creates a strange juxtaposition when the modern profanities are in close proximity to his more archaic phrases. Quote: Beyond his archaic slang and modern profanity, Jake is actually very eloquent at times, and maintains an impressive vocabulary not easily matched by most of the characters. (I think Kanaya, Rose, and Hussie beat him, but that might be it.) He sometimes makes words up, but usually not where there would be an appropriate real word, and mostly as a jest. For example, calling the auto-responder "Doppleglasses". |

Wow. Great collection of quotes there! Starting to think maybe getting a good Jake will take even longer than I thought, if it's even possible.
Practice practice practice? I usually play John, Rose, Tavros, Karkat, Terezi, Vriska, sober/stoned Gamzee, Eridan, The Signless, Redglare, Mindfang, Dualscar, or Jake.

I would also reccomend looking up for some 20s slangs, and use them sparingly. In all honesty he's a complex character to portray, but a really entertaining one as well.
i have your altar in my closet. pataki style because i'm stuck in the nineties.

RE: Roleplaying This Jake Kid
Oh boy is this handy. Jake is rather complex to play, in my opinion. and i don't think i do him all that well, but I have been working on it!
he does use a strange mix of slang and modern terms, mostly british, but there are also some american and australian sounding ones. as for the latter, many are rooted in british slang itself, so they are very similar. i suggest looking up slang words that can be used in conversation, but not going over the top. he uses more obscure ones, many of which i've never heard of, and they are far from stereotypical british slang words. Aside from that, his quirk is fairly simple- No punctuation unless hes finishing a sentence. Uses asterisks for *emphasis* and conversational roleplaying *grins*. Caps only at the start of sentences, and none for i or proper nouns, but when he gets FLUSTERED, he uses it LIBERALLY along with LOTS OF EXCLAMATION!!!!! SOMETIMES DOES A WHOLE SENTENCE IN CAPS. Oh and also. Looking for odd and old fashioned sounding synonyms for words is good, if you don't want to venture back into 19th century victorian slang lists. often the words he uses are just slightly more obscure synonyms for more regular-sounding ones! try a thesaurus website, like thesaurus.com (which is pretty obvious.) dis my tumblr i like to rp and am up for pretty much anything. so pm me, if you'd like to roleplay cause that would be totally awesome C: |

RE: Roleplaying This Jake Kid
His manner of *action things* has actually been inconsistent. Once, he capitalized and punctuated it; another time, he neither capitalized nor punctuated. I'm not sure what to make of it at this point.
But at this point, I only recall him doing it three or four times. In other words, don't overdo it. |
